Self Hypnosis Techniques

Self hypnosis techniques offer a way to access your subconscious mind. You can learn hypnosis and use it on yourself to affect changes. Because it works at the subconscious level, it can alter behaviour and thinking patterns at their roots, and therefore this change can last a lifetime.

You can use self hypnosis techniques to:

  • Lose weight
  • Control your anger
  • Reduce stress
  • Combat depression and anxiety
  • Change aspects of your personality
  • Gain more confidence

There’s virtually no limit to what you can accomplish through self hypnosis techniques. You can use it to finally make those changes you’ve been dreaming of.

The Fundamentals Of Self Hypnosis Techniques

There are many different types of self hypnosis techniques, but all have the same first step – to get yourself into a relaxed, calm and suggestive state of mind. When the mind is in this state of relaxation, you have direct access to the subconscious where your patterns of thought and behaviour are stored. Once you access this part of the mind, you can change these patterns.

Deep breathing is essential for getting into the right state of mind, but it takes some getting used to. Each breath should be long and natural. It’s important not to force your breathing. At first, this is difficult for most of us to do. One thing that helps is to count breaths. Start with 1 and work your way up to 20; then, if you’re still not in a relaxed state, descend back to 1. Counting gets your mind off things and focuses it on your breathing.

You may also try creative visualisation. This is a type of meditation where you picture a relaxed scene, such as a white sandy beach or a mountain meadow. Think of any place that makes you feel calm and relaxed, and mentally transport yourself there. There are other creative visualisation exercises that you can use as well, such as picturing a white light passing over the body, or imagining yourself descending a staircase.

You should always practice self hypnosis techniques in a relaxing place. There should be as few distractions as possible and your body should be in a natural, comfortable position.

Self Hypnosis Techniques – Positive Affirmations

Once in this state of mind, it’s time to apply the self hypnosis techniques you’re going to use. One of the easiest and most effective self hypnosis techniques is to use positive affirmations. These are simple phrases that you repeat over and over to yourself while in a hypnotic state. As you repeat them, they become grooved in your subconscious.

These statements can be anything at all, but they must be positive. Your subconscious reacts strongly to negative statements and will not take to them. So, if you want to combat depression, you would not say, ‘I’m not a depressed person.’ Instead, you would choose a phrase like, ‘I’m a positive and optimistic person.’

Creative Visualisation Under Hypnosis

Positive affirmations use words to influence the subconscious mind. Other self hypnosis techniques use images. Creative visualisation can be used to get you into a relaxed state of mind; it can also be used once in that state to make changes to your subconscious. This technique is also called guided imagery or mental rehearsal.

While under hypnosis, perfectly imagine a vivid and detailed scene. Use all of your senses and really put yourself there. If you become distracted, acknowledge the distraction and let it pass; it doesn’t need to interfere with your image.

In the image, you should be doing whatever it is that you want to do. If you want to lose weight, imagine yourself thin and fit. If you’re using self hypnosis techniques to improve your sports performance, imagine yourself reaching your desired goal. If it’s financial success you want to train your mind toward, see yourself as someone successful in whatever way you perceive that to be.

All self hypnosis techniques should focus on the positive. Just like your affirmations, negative images should not be used. It’s especially important to end with a positive image as you come out of hypnosis.

Coming Out Of Hypnosis

When developing self hypnosis techniques, it’s important to also develop a method for coming out of hypnosis. Although there’s no risk of getting ‘stuck’ in a hypnotised state and unable to come back to conscious reality, it can be jarring if not done properly, and this shock can weaken its effects.

The perfect ascent out of a hypnotic state is slow, gradual and relaxed. It should be a routine that you perform the same way each time. What works best is a simple reversal of the self hypnosis techniques that you use to get into a hypnotic state. For example, if you picture yourself descending a staircase, imagine yourself slowly going back up the staircase at the end.

How To Learn Hypnosis

Anyone can learn hypnosis. Although we often see hypnosis on the stage performed by people who we perceive to have almost magical powers, in reality this is not the case at all. Absolutely anyone can learn hypnosis through study and practice.

Practice is the most important part. Most methods are extremely simple and at first they may seem very easy. But once you actually apply your self hypnosis techniques, you’ll see what a challenge it truly is. For example, getting yourself into a completely relaxed state is much harder than most people realise. However, through regular practice, you can easily master your self hypnosis techniques.

When you learn hypnosis, it may also help to practice on others. Hypnotising others is called ‘hetero-hypnosis.’ Both hetero-hypnosis and self-hypnosis are fundamentally the same; the only difference is that with self hypnosis techniques, you’re using them on yourself without someone else as a guide.

Finally, when you decide to learn hypnosis, keep in mind that it may take time. Be patient and don’t expect it to work immediately. It often takes many repeated sessions before self hypnosis techniques begin producing results. However, as you practice more and master your own mind, it will become much easier to get into a hypnotic state and make changes to your subconscious mind.

    Although self-hypnosis (or auto-suggestion) can be very useful, hypnosis conducted between a qualified hypnotist and a hypnotee takes the cake.

      Totally agree – when it is something clinical. Using a professional hypnotist for personal development is really cool only if you are having difficulty sorting the problem yourself. Bet you see a fair bit of that – BTW I like your site.
